October 11 . . . Crosby Canyon and our first dents in the FJ.

One of the joys of kayaking on Lake Powell, is the journey through the desert to a launch point. After sticking to the established campgrounds and boat ramps for our previous treks across the glimmering waters, we decided to venture towards Warm Creek Bay. This landscape seems to belong on the moon or maybe Luke Skywalker is just around the corner. The route would be Crosby Canyon . . . at one point there was a graded road . . . now, it’s a dry and wet creek bottom in a canyon of varying widths. We got within a mile of the lake before a washout halted our progress. The going had been technical at times, while good old fashioned horse power provided a boost through the mud and sand. The above pics illustrate Ponce in classic form, conquering the mud, then celebrating the skills he learned as a ute in Walla Walla. Below is a depiction of what happened five minutes later . . .Those kayaks are supposed to be on the roof and the kayak rack is meant to be attached to a cross beam on the roof rack. And that hood was a shimmering green with no dents moments before as well. They cascaded off the front of the vehicle in spectacular slow motion. No fear, Wilson laughed it off, made the repairs and off we went, at a slower speed.

With Warm Creek Bay a bust, we settled for an afternoon paddle from Wahweap, returning just before sunset to 77 degrees and a full moon rising over Navajo Mountain.
