October 7-8 . . . Back to civilization and a lesson repeated.

Friday morning, the storm has passed, but it’s still cool and windy. We brought these dam Golf Clubs with us for days like today, and Dam, we are going to use them. The Lake Powell National Golf Course was a pleasant surprise. It overlooks the Glen Canyon Dam and accompanying bridge, and if you fill out the handy Page, Arizona tourism card, 18 holes will set you back 37 bucks. The lush green grass and red rocks provided a refreshing palette for our eyes after 5 days of pure desert and grey clouds in nearly every direction. The signature hole was a tee shot off a cliff to a green 150 yards away, but it seemed to also be a 150 yards down. How do you choose a club for that?
Saturday morning brought us GameDay, with the Cougar Flag getting the spotlight along with the rumor of Chris, Lee, and Kirk heading to Pullman next weekend if the Mighty Cougs could vanquish the lowly Bruins. Okay, enough of that false hope.

With warming temps (all the way to 61 today), we decided to once again head across to Lake Powell, this time venturing north from Lone Rock to explore the slot canyons on the far shore. We found the slot canyons, and navigated our way up and down several in our kayaks. We also came across a rather large encampment . . . one house boat and about 20 tents on the sand dune up one of the bigger canyons. These guys came prepared, standup paddle boards, boats, jet skis, plus a bmx bike outfitted in a life preserver with the obligatory bike ramp for jumping off the cliffs into the lake. If we can figure out how to post video, we’ll post a nice clip of one of the kids doing a back flip on his bike off a cliff into the water.

Naturally, the winds picked up in the afternoon, and we were faced with yet another treacherous open water crossing of more than mile to the safety and warmth of the FJ. Once arriving back at camp, we dialed up the Cougars game and were quickly introduced to our German neighbors who decided it would be better for them if we didn’t run our generator at 7:30pm, since they were trying to sleep. The Old Man obliged, but he did seem to relish playing his recorded F1 race (on radio) the next morning at level loud enough to disturb anyone in the next site over.
